Is there going to be a way for members to edit the thumbnails that represent their images? My illustration's thumbnails get scrunched and pixelated if they don't fit within the square boundry the thumbnail area requires. I just want people to see them clearly.

Kyle,

This was by desgn to give the site a clean look.  Our artists discussed and voted on the current look for the small thumbnails.  Of course we are looking to the site advisors to give us their opinion and we can easily change it.  There are four versions of the orginal file you upload - small medium, large converted jpg, the original and the jam version.  Only the small version is stretched.

Let's use this as a public discussion to vote on what the advisors want to see.

Should the small thumbnails be in their original aspect ratio or stretched to give the site a clean look?

Thanks,

David

Well you know my vote....

Original aspect ratio. If the site is supposed to help members gain clientel and promote their work, then giving them a squashed thumbnail doesn't represent the work very well to me.

The thumbnails look terrible squashed and blurred.  I would never present images to potential clients in this fashion if I expected them to hire us or take us seriously.  They will think that this is what they can expect to receive.  This is the worst presentation of professional work I have ever seen.  There is no doubt that the thumbnails should be as clear and crisp as I sent them.

There's no question the thumbnails need to remain in their original aspect ratio. There is nothing clean about a distorted image and there is no way I would present myself or my brand in anything less than professional. If I were an art director looking for a collaborator and saw this distortion, I would question the artist's decision-making skills. If he or she thinks this looks okay, then it sure doesn't bode well for my project.

As the founders of JaMuse know, there's got to be a better way. I would suggest there's got to be a better way to keep a clean look without affecting the integrity of the work.

I think the best thing I could say is this: If I were an artist needing an online community and I was looking at jamuse for the first time and considering using it, my first turn off would be the thumbnail quality. If I then found out upon browsing through the site that jamuse wouldn't allow the thumbnail to be the right resolution annd aspect ratio to represent my work well to incoming clientel, that would be a deal breaker for me and I would move on. One thing might be to allow a seperate thumbnail image to be uploaded and use it to link to the larger image the way the thumbnails do now. That way it could still be the size that jamuse wants but allow the artist to create a proper representative thumbnail for the large portfolio image.

The thumbnails can be changed very quickly...almost instantly.  I appreciate your patience as this is certainly important, but not hard to change.  We'll wait for a few more advisors to weigh in on this and other concerns/improvements and discuss with our creative team.  This is the type of comments we appreciate and exactly why we invited you early.

I totally agree with all.
The 1st time I came in, when I saw the thumbnails I just think: "Hope this is temporary"
Not good to be a site about creative talent with so bad images.

There are people without profile thumbnail. Don't like it, everybody must put one.
Don't you agree?

This is a little bit of a dead thread, but it seems to be the best place to mention that video thumbnails are still being distorted. Did this slip through the cracks? Could it be fixed as easily as the still-image thumbnails?
